| Sajen, Inc., based in Putney, Vermont makes available the exclusive jewelry designs of Marianna and Richard Jacobs. Over the years, Sajen’s jewelry line has taken on a style that is unmistakably contemporary, while maintaining a subtle ethnic character through the use of Balinese techniques. Richard and Marianna are able to design intricate and unique pieces because of their thorough understanding of how these skilled craftsmen work. |

| As a graduate student at Yale School of Art, Richard Jacobs won a Luce Scholarship to paint in Bali, Indonesia. So off he and Marianna went, to Ubud, the cultural center of Bali, to live in a thatched roof bamboo house bordering a rice paddy. While Richard developed his art, Marianna worked in a silver factory, creating jewelry, learning the ancient secrets of the Balinese master silversmiths, and developing friendships with the craftsmen who now produce Sajen’s quality line. One of the many aspects of Balinese culture that influenced the Jacobs was the daily tradition of making exquisite floral "offerings" to appease the gods. These offerings were often as simple as the presentation on a palm leaf of a few flower petals with rice and incense. They commonly saw lines of women walking to temple with ornate floral and fruit offerings stacked up to six feet high on top of their heads. These offerings inspired their choice of “Sajen” (Indonesian word for “offerings”) as the company’s name. According to Richard, "One of the most exciting aspects of the business is the pursuit of high quality semi- precious stones from all over the world." Sometimes new styles call for a particular stone combination, but often, learning about a new stone can spark a whole new design direction. For example, after discovering a rare source of Namibian Pietersite, the Jacobs designed several pin/pendants incorporating these mysterious stones. Since that magical start in 1987, Sajen’s customer base has grown rapidly, giving Richard and Marianna the opportunity to create an expanding range of designs that meet the diverse tastes of their audience. As a result, they are pleased to have this opportunity to “offer” to you through their designs the fine stones and metals that mother nature has made available to them. *Sajen history and pictures provided by www.sajenjewelry.com, a wholesale website. |
